Premiere of “El Maleh Rachamim” in a Version for Classical Guitar
The third version of the composition “El Maleh Rachamim” (Merciful God) for classical guitar, this time performed by Austrian guitarist, conductor, and composer Ronen Nissan, has appeared on Baruch Berliner’s YouTube channel.
A conductor, arranger, and guitarist, Mr. Nissan has a repertoire spanning symphonic and sacred music, film scores, and tango projects.
He served 15 years as the musical director of Chor und Orchester St. Stephan in Tulln, Austria, doubling as the conductor of the main choir of the Vienna Synagogue and as an assistant conductor at Neue Oper Wien and Wiener Operntheater. Mr. Nissan is an arranger and guitarist for the Vienna Tango Quintet, with which he has toured Austria, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Poland, Turkey, and Israel.
“El Maleh Rachamim” serves as the soundtrack to the film Address on the Wall, which depicts the World War II tragedy at Babi Yar. The soundtrack was composed by Baruch Berliner, Nachum Slutzker, and Sergey Krutsenko (RIP).
Various musicians and orchestras have performed the composition to honor the memory of Holocaust victims, with videos of the performances available on the Holocaust memorial project website at www.elmalehrachamim.com. The website also features sheet music for different versions of the piece.
