Zagreb to Host Concert as Part of Tour Covering Pula, Rijeka, and Mali Lošinj
On Sunday, the Zagreb Soloists will give a concert at the Croatian State Archives in Zagreb, with cellist Boris Andrianov joining them to perform the composition Jacob’s Dream for cello and string ensemble by Israeli composer Baruch Berliner as part of a broader program.
Along with works by Dr. Berliner, the program will include Symphony No. 9 by Amando Ivančić, as well as Caprice No. 4 and Caprice No. 24 by Niccolò Paganini.
Dr. Berliner’s Jacob’s Dream is inspired by the biblical story of Jacob, who dreamed of a ladder reaching to Heaven and beheld the Creator Himself promising prosperity to him and his descendants. As noted in the concert announcement, the piece was originally composed as a symphonic poem but was later reimagined as a concerto for cello and string ensemble, following advice given by world-renowned cellist Mischa Maisky to composer Baruch Berliner and producer Nachum Slutzker.
Cellist Boris Andrianov, as the concert organizers highlight, has performed in the world’s most celebrated venues and at prestigious festivals, all while maintaining a very busy touring schedule. He has also participated in numerous international and national projects which bring together world-class performers. Especially commendable are his efforts to expand the reach of classical music across his homeland—particularly in rural areas. He has appeared with leading orchestras and conductors, including Valery Gergiev, Krzysztof Penderecki, Alexander Vedernikov, Gianandrea Noseda, Dmitry Liss, Roman Kofman, among others, having also performed alongside Yuri Bashmet, Menahem Pressler, Akiko Suwanai, and Janine Jansen.
The Zagreb Soloists ensemble was founded in 1953 as part of Radio Zagreb under the artistic direction of cellist Antonio Janigro. Since 2012, the ensemble has been led by its concertmaster, violinist Sreten Krstić, who also holds the same position at the Munich Philharmonic. To date, the Zagreb Soloists have performed nearly four thousand concerts across all continents, in the world’s major cultural centers and most famous concert halls. Their repertoire embraces baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary music, with a particular emphasis on revitalizing earlier works and showcasing the new generation of Croatian composers. This concert is part of a tour that includes performances in Pula, Rijeka, and Mali Lošinj.
